This presentation was shared at the Leading Edge Libraries Conference, hosted by the Florida-Caribbean Chapter of the Special Libraries Association, on September 22, 2017.
Summary: As libraries continue to acquire more electronic resources and open access content for their collections, the integrated library system is no longer sufficient to connect users with all the relevant research available. Discovery services and discovery layers have emerged as a solution to that problem, allowing users to simultaneously search local catalog holdings, licensed databases, electronic journal subscriptions, and more. This session will first present an overview of discovery services, discovery layer features and practical questions to consider when evaluating discovery products. Then, hear how Lancaster Theological Seminary chose EBSCO Discovery Service, integrated it with Koha ILS, and taught patrons how to use it.
Learning Outcomes: Participants will be able to compare leading discovery layers and assess whether a particular discovery layer is right for their library.
